Deniliquin NSW Fire and Rescue’s fire station annual open day was a flaming success on Saturday.

And it wasn’t just sirens and hosing around that grabbed the crowd’s attention, with crew members simulating a kitchen fire in the George St carpark adjacent the station.

Apart from a spectacular fireball display, the demonstration gave people a vital lesson in home fire safety when extinguishing a blaze.

Captain Marty Smith said crew members demonstrated how to use a fire blanket on an oil fire and what happens when water is thrown on that type of fire.
