Two Deniliquin South School teachers celebrated Cornalla’s win at the swimming carnival in style on Friday.
Aimee Liefting and Luke Moodie made a promise to the students in Cornalla house that if they won they would jump into the pool fully clothed.
The extra motivation clearly worked with Cornalla scoring 129 points to claim their third house shield in a row.
‘‘This is my third year having to jump in the pool,’’ Ms Liefting said.
‘‘I’ve made this promise every year and they keep on winning.’’
Kookaburra friend
A quiet kookaburra sat with golfers at the Deniliquin Golf Club, watching them prepare for Sunday’s charity game.
The bird sat on a bench with some men before flying over to another spot, just outside the pro shop, once they started getting into their teams.
Regular golfers say the kookaburra is friendly, and occasionally even lets them pat him.
One golfer told the Pastoral Times that the old cook used to feed the birds and that is why they are so tame.
Another golfer said the kookaburra loves a sausage sizzle and throws him a cooked sausage which he treats like a snake, beating it on the ground to break it apart.
Cooking in cricket
While the Under 14s Rhinos cricket team came away with a win, their performance was significantly affected by Sunday’s heat.
The young boys usually start at 8.30am, but the semi final game against Barooga was pushed to a 10.30am start.
Coach Anthony Bradley told the Pastoral Times the heat was ‘‘cooking them’’ with two players coming off the field with a headache and feeling faint.
The finals are the only games all year with a different starting time so Mr Bradley has requested the grand final game against Nathalia in Deni on Sunday starts at 9.30am.
Show time
The Deniliquin Show is just 10 days away, starting March 6.
Don’t forget, pavilion entry deadlines are between Monday, March 2 and Friday, March 6. Entries must have been created in the past 12 months and be the work of the exhibitor.
The pavilion is only one element of the two day show, which also features sheep and wool, beef, dairy and cattle, horse events, poultry, yard dog trials, junior judging (tiny tots) and the Giant Atlantic Pumpkin.
Details and conditions for each event are outlined in the show program, available at Deniliquin Newsagency & Bookstore, MyShop, Peppin Heritage Centre, Deniliquin Jewellers, Elders Rural Services, Landmark, Taskers, Salvation Army Family Store and online at www.deniliquinshow.com.au.
